Visual Testing Level I/II

Often overlooked, visual testing is an important method in the broad field of nondestructive testing. This is always the first method to be performed as an appearance of a surface condition or abnormality is usually the trigger for more extensive NDT Methods. Visual Testing I & II educates the student on the most commonly used NDT method while exposing him/or her to the complexity of different techniques.

Often underappreciated, visual testing is a crucial method within the field of nondestructive testing (NDT). As the first step in any NDT process, it is typically used to identify surface conditions or abnormalities that may prompt the need for more advanced testing methods. Visual Testing I & II provides a thorough introduction to this essential NDT technique while also exploring the complexities of its various applications.

In this course, we cover:

• •The history and fundamentals of Visual Testing
• •An overview of common testing applications
• •Different types of visual testing equipment, including welding gauges
• •The advantages and limitations of visual testing
• •Identifying indications and defects
• •Reporting and documenting defects

Upon completing this course, students will be able to:

• •Distinguish between remote and direct visual testing techniques
• •Understand and identify the various types of gauges, micrometers, and measuring devices used in visual testing, including welding gauges
• •Perform and document visual inspections in accordance with applicable code requirements
• •Utilize a virtual reality (VR) simulator to practice and reinforce visual inspection skills in a controlled environment

The course includes 16 hours of hands-on training, where instructors will demonstrate the use of welding gauges, calipers, and remote visual equipment. Students will also gain experience using a VR Welding simulator to identify how a change in welding variables can create discontinuities, providing a realistic and interactive learning experience. Additionally, students will participate in mock-up and practical exams designed to simulate real-world NDT scenarios. Upon successful completion, participants will receive 32 hours of accredited classroom instruction and a Classroom Certificate, with knowledge assessed through an exam.

This course meets the requirements in accordance with SNT-TC-1A, CP189, NAS410, and outline of CP105.
